The Insanity of God by Nik Ripken

I finished The Insanity of God by Nik Ripken recently. My mother told me to read this book as I was dealing with my own frustrations in ministry (thank you mom for telling me to read this book). Let me highly recommend this book for everyone to pick up and read. This book will have parts that are very difficult to read, but The Insanity of God will help you realize what some of our brothers and sisters in Christ are going through in parts of the world that are hostile toward Christianity. The stories will break your heart, and make you cry. However, I pray you will be comforted that God is still working things out for his glory today. You may even have to put it down between chapters in order to think through the stories of persecuted Christians that are being explained. In fact, I put down this book at one point and went to the grocery store (I knew Katie and the kids were there) to give all of them a hug.

However, true followers of Christ know that suffering for righteousness' sake brings rejoicing and gladness because our reward is in heaven (Matthew 5:10-11). This book will let you see what real faith looks like in the face of adversity. When I completed this book, I sent a text to my mom and wrote, "Oh Me of little faith." Would I have faith like our brothers and sisters in Christ dealing with some of the situations they deal with on a daily basis? I have never suffered in the same manner that other brothers and sisters across this globe have, but their faith remains not only strong but exponentially growing. May this book cause us as Christians in the land of the free to drop to our knees and pray for those being persecuted daily.

I was feeling sorry for myself because ministry was not looking the way that I thought it would look. After reading the book, I realized the way my ministry looks is exactly how God wants my ministry to look. I began to realize, "Lord, who am I to question what you are doing just because I can't see it?" The stories of these brothers and sisters in Christ really exposed my lack of faith in what God is doing for his glory. Things that you and I cannot or maybe will not ever see does not matter because the Holy Spirit is still alive and working in this fallen world (even right now).

Will you take the challenge to read a book that could potentially resurrect your faith like the title says? I am convinced that the Holy Spirit remains active and alive in today's society. God is doing things that we may not be able to see, but God works all things out in his own timing for his own glory. May we be reminded of Psalm 37:7a which reads, "Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him." Read about what God is doing in hostile areas of the world in The Insanity of God.

Teaching Reconciliation to Children

One of the many joys of parenting comes in the form of teaching our children new things. We all remember the first time we taught our child or children to tie their shoes, to hit a T-Ball, or to ride a bicycle. Most of us were just as thrilled to watch our children learn and succeed as they were in accomplishing the task before them. In this post, I want to encourage Christian parents to teach their children the biblical principle of reconciliation. By reconciliation, I mean restoring a relationship when sin has hurt the relationship. We need to be honest with ourselves; our children are not perfect. Our children's hearts are prone to sinful actions (Prov. 22:15). Our children will be sinned against and will sin against others. God has graciously blessed us with our children for only a short amount of time. Which means, God has placed our children with us in order that we may teach them the ways of the Lord. All Christian parents should desire to one day send their children ou...

Components for Analyzing Quality Curriculum

Student pastors are constantly bombarded with the newest curriculum that some Christian agency has developed to grow students to a spiritual level that other curriculum was unable to achieve. Most student pastors may ask the question, “Which curriculum will achieve the desired results for students?” This blog will propose three components of quality curriculum for student and family ministry. First, theology proper in the traditional Protestant system may be defined as the Doctrine of God.[1] Quality curriculum will exploit God as omnipresent, omniscient, holy, triune, creator, sustainer, redeemer, merciful, just, righteous, and any remaining characteristics within each lesson. Students must be exposed to the glory of God through his special revelation to his people. Quality curriculum will develop the majesty of King Jesus so that students will be in reverence and awe of God’s nature therefore willing to live lives for his glory in light of receiving the gospel. Teaching the Lost Art of Chivalry

Chivalry . . . . That's a word you don't hear everyday. According to Merriam and Webster, one of the definitions for chivalry is, "an honorable and polite way of behaving especially toward women." I believe that we need to bring back the lost art of chivalry in our culture. I know that some movements desire to eradicate the idea of chivalry, but I believe we as fathers, student pastors, and teachers should foster a culture of young men that embrace the ideas associated with being a gentlemen towards women.  God made women and men different, and that's a good thing (Gen 1:27; Gen 2:18-25). God made us spiritually equal (Gal 3:28), but functionally we have complementary roles (Eph 5:22-33). Therefore, chivalry is not dead, but it is dormant. I believe we should teach young men how to behave like young men, and teach them how to treat women with politeness, gentleness, and kindness.  If you ever come to a student ministry event with me, you will hear me...
